Amazing Ways to Clean up Your Life

The most common requests we receive for junk removal services are to clean out the garage and haul your junk away so your car can use the garage again! Other requests include old mattresses, furniture and appliances. Here we have included tips and tricks to get rid of unwanted junk and get your life back!

How do I Clean Out my Garage Full of Junk?

The space in your garage is very useful for storage and can even be re-purposed as a man cave, work or entertainment area and even as an additional bedroom. Problem is, your garage is probably filled with junk that you have collected over the years and no longer have any actual use for.

So what do you do with all the junk so that you maximize the potential of your garage space?

Simply follow these 6 easy steps to clearing out your garage in just a couple of days:

Step 1 - Empty Your Garage

Take everything outside onto the driveway and sorting everything into piles marked keep, discard and sell/donate as you go. Don't be overly thoughtful about the items and try to place as much as possible in the discard or sell/donate piles as possible.

Step 2 - The Discard Pile

Depending on the size of the discard pile, you can either throw the items in the trash, take it to your local dump site or hire a skip. Remember to keep items that are recyclable aside and discard of these items appropriately.

Step 3 - The Sell/Donate Pile

Any items that you wish to sell can be taken to a local pawn shop. Alternatively, a yard sale is a great way to make a little cash off the junk in your garage. Remember that one man's junk is another man's treasure. All items that are not sold off within the same day should be added to the donate pile and taken to a local charity. If you have items that you want to give to specific people, give them a call to collect the item and if it isn't gone by day's end, it can also join the charity pile.

Always keep in mind that the goal is to get rid of as much junk as possible in 1 day.

Step 6 - Clean

You may want to spend some additional time giving your garage a good scrub down especially if it has been collecting junk for an extended period of time. Grab the vacuum and suck up all the dust, dirt and debris from the floor, other surfaces and even the walls. Pay special attention to the corners where dirt can collect.

Dilute a good abrasive or bleach cleaner in a bucket of water and start scrubbing. Use a hard bristle broom dipped in your cleaning solution rather than a mop to really scrub the floors and even the walls. The broom is also great at reaching higher up on the walls if you prefer not to climb a ladder to get to those hard to reach places.

Any shelves, cabinets or other storage containers that you have in the garage should also be vacuumed and scrubbed. Ensure that the area is entirely dry before bringing any goods from your keep pile. Remember that wet surfaces that don't dry quickly are prone to mold and other types of fungal growth.

Step 5 - Organize

If you don't have any shelves, closets or other type of organized storage space in your garage, it may be a good idea to install these in order to pack away the items from your keep pile properly. Placing items in boxes is not ideal as they will be difficult to access when needed. If you are putting items in boxes, they might as well have joined the discard or sell/donate pile in step 1 of your garage clearing process.

Step 6 - The Keep Pile

Items in the keep pile should be sorted according to different categories such as tools, gardening equipment, sentimental items and any other label that you can think of. Place these items on the shelves, in the closets or other organizing features that you have added to your garage space. Label any boxes or storage containers as to the contents and category.

It is absolutely essential to be as objective as you possibly can when clearing the junk out of your garage. If you aren't, then you will spend the time simply moving items out of the garage and back in without actually getting rid of very much. If you do have difficulty throwing things out, ask a slightly OCD family member or friend for some help.

Where to Get Rid of Old Appliances and Electronics

Nowadays, we get new appliances and electronics seemingly every year. Because of this, it is becoming increasingly important to know where to get rid of our old electronics. In this article, we will be going over some of the top tips for getting rid of your old things.

Getting Rid Of Old Appliances Or Electronics:

1. Retailers.

One of the best ways to successfully get rid of things that you are not interested in keeping any longer would be retailers. A lot of retailers are not only going to be willing to take your old electronics and appliances, but they might even pay you money for them. Therefore, you should check with local retailers whenever you are thinking about getting rid of something and you don't want to deal with the hassle of selling it.

2. Craigslist.

Another good option would be to list your item on Craigslist. Depending on whether you are looking to recoup some money for it or if you are just looking to get rid of it for nothing is going to determine how long it takes you to find a taker. However, if you are selling relatively new electronics or appliances, you will find it very easy to sell them on this marketplace. However, even if you are selling or getting rid of an old electronic, you would be surprised at the amount of money you can get for it. After all, a lot of people might be interested in buying what you have for parts.

3. Manufacturers.

Another good option to check for would be direct from manufacturers. Some manufacturers are going to be willing and able to pay you to ship the products back to them for recycling. They usually do this for tax write-offs and for their corporate responsibility. However, they also want to keep you in their respective upgrade cycle. Therefore, they tend to try to make it as easy as possible.

4. eBay.

If you are talking about selling old appliances or electronics, another option that you could seek is selling them on eBay. This is going to be a much more labor intensive operation, but you will want to take part in something like this if you are looking to recoup as much of the cost as possible. You will typically get a lot more for something on eBay than selling it locally purely because you will have much more of a market to sell to. Whereas, if you are looking to not have to deal with the hassle of listing the product, paying for shipping, and actually shipping it, you will want to stick to local offers.

5. Facebook Marketplace.

This is a growing marketplace that is becoming very convenient. You are going to find a lot less people trying to 'scam' you on Facebook simply because it requires you to put a face to your profile. Therefore, you will generally find a lot more people that are actively looking for something and you will be able to negotiate better prices on it.

6. Ask Around.

Another good way to figure out where to recycle or get rid of something like this would be to simply ask around. Chances are you know someone that is in need of what you are looking to get rid of. Therefore, you can help someone out by simply asking your friends and family and seeing who needs whatever it is that you are getting rid of whether for free or for money. This is a good option for those that want to deal with people they know or trust.

Overall, a lot of it is going to depend on what you are looking to get rid of and how much it is still worth. No one should be giving away or recycling relatively new appliances or electronics if they are still worth something. After all, you want to recoup some of the buy cost of your new upgrade. The best way to recycle old stuff is by looking around to see retailers that are actively taking electronics and appliances that you can hand to them. This is the easiest way to get rid of things that have little to no value at all.
